September in Photos

Just wanted to share some pictures from the beginning of the semester :) Here's a few things that I did in september.

One huge plus of my apartment is it's vicinity to Crispy Crepes. Pictured here is a crepe with ricotta cheese and raspberry jam. So good! I've had it twice already this year..

One day my roommate and I decided to venture around Central Square, Cambridge. This is a crazy wall with tons of graffiti on it. She let me borrow her fisheye lens and I had some fun.

I had heard good things about Kickass Cupcakes..so when there was a Buy With Me deal for 6 cupcakes for $9 from their food truck I decided to go for it. It was totally worth it! I had one and was able to share. The cinnamon chai pecan sticky cupcake..so delicious.

Stay tuned for more picture updates and other craziness.

Finally our first review! Life Alive: Approved for All Eaters

Step off the sidewalk in Central Square in Cambridge, and enter into an earthy paradise where the workers are friendly and love their jobs, the sauces are all made in-house, the fruits and vegetables are fresh and packed with nutrients, the grains are perfectly cooked, and the smoothies are creamy enough to substitute as meals themselves. Life Alive is an organic restaurant where all the menu items are vegetarian and most are vegan. THIS ISN’T RABBIT FOOD! If I told my friends that I was taking them to a vegetarian restaurant, the majority of them would begin picturing what they call “rabbit food,” meaning bland, textureless, boring dishes that could only fill up a tiny rabbit-sized stomach. The food at Life Alive is the exact opposite of this. I promise you: Live Alive does not sacrifice flavor.

With my parents in town and the feeling of fighting away a cold, I knew I wanted to take them somewhere different than what they can find at home, but healthy enough to give my immune system the boost it needed. Because it was unseasonably warm last night, we sat outside, but Life Alive also has seating on the main floor and in the basement. The main floor is bright and screams nature, while the basement has a very chill atmosphere; I’ve been told they have live music down there from time-to-time.

How it works: after deciding on what you want, go up an order from the cashier. They will give you a number to put on your table (if you’re dining in) and they’ll bring it to your table when it’s ready. You can also get your food to go, which a LOT of people were doing last night.

So what about the food? My “usual” is copied from my friend who first introduced me to Life Alive: The Rebel. The Rebel (besides having a killer name) is packed with protein-rich quinoa (one of the few plant-based complete protein sources), short grain brown rice (I LOVE the texture of short grain brown rice, it’s chewier than long-grain in a VERY good way), bright orange steamed carrots, dark-leafy greens that embody “healthfulness”, broccoli, hijiki, beats, and tofu. This warm bowl of deliciousness is then tossed in sweet, very low fat Sesame Ginger and Ginger Nama Shoyu sauces. I usually have a hard time finishing my plate, but I have never not finished this meal. Yes, it’s big. But it leaves you feeling full and healthy, rather than full and weighed down.
The Rebel

My parents got the Adventurer and added avocado to it. My dad, a lover of salt, even commented that his meal had so much flavor that he wasn't tempted to add salt to it. Trust me this is an accomplishment. Both parents also mentioned how satisfying their meals were – neither missed not having meat.

I’ve also tried their Chai Alive “Smoothie.” I put smoothie in quotes because it was more like a milkshake (or a frappe for you New Englanders) than a smoothie. Four simple ingredients: Chai, banana, vegan ice cream, and almond milk. It tastes like a perfectly made chai latte on a creamy high. My friend got the Elvis Alive with peanut butter, cocoa, banana, ice cream, and rice milk. Needless to say he was in taste heaven for hours after.

Omnivore, vegetarian, or vegan. Doesn’t matter which you are. Just go here.

Food Quotes

So I love reading quotes. Some people are so inspiring..others are just hilarious and I love things that make you think. I've been looking at food quotes recently and I found a few that I want to share!

It's bizarre that the produce manager is more important to my children's health than the pediatrician.  ~Meryl Streep
I love this..most people don't think about it but diet is such an important part of overall health. America is getting so caught up in "a pill for every ill" that no one stops to think that a well balanced diet can prevent so many conditions.

Food is an important part of a balanced diet.  ~Fran Lebowitz, Metropolitan Life, "Food for Thought and Vice Versa"
This is another one that I feel rings true with how people are eating today. Processed cheese product? What does that even mean? Can't I just eat cheese? So many "foods" are made of all these crazy chemicals that no one can even pronounce. Why would you want to put that in your body? When I'm food shopping I like to use Michael Pollan's rules of, buy it if it has less than 5 ingredients and the ingredients have less than 3 syllables. Perfect.

If God had intended us to follow recipes,
He wouldn't have given us grandmothers.
~Linda Henley

This is just cute :)

Sticky Words

As a society, we are OBSESSED with pictures. Think about it. The best part of Facebook? Sharing *stalking* yours and other people's pictures. How do you get someone to pick up your magazine? Have an awesome picture on the front. Movies and TV. Although not "pictures" they are still images. We love things we can see. First impressions are even based on looks first. With so much emphasis on appearance, it's no wonder that people are overly body conscious.

Check out their website for more information on Weight Stigma and how you can participate

This week is Weight Stigma Awareness Week. Weight stigma is the judgment of a person based solely on their body size. Body image and disordered eating are topics that I have very strong feelings about and a very personal relationship with. I'll maybe share my story on here in later posts, but for now head on over to my post about Weight Stigma Awareness Week on the Sargent Choice Nutrition Center Blog. Also check out THIS post on body image. Although the event itself was last spring, there are some quotes on there that are always relevant.

'I refuse to become part of this perfect-body syndrome. I like my body. It looks good on-screen, and it's not because it's perfect. I accept it and wear it like a good dress... One guy I dated said: "You're beautiful, but you're soft. You can't compete with other actresses in Hollywood because everyone's in shape and working out." I said: "Very nice to meet you. Good-bye!"' -- Salma Hayek

Watching and Reading

With my crazy busy schedule (2 jobs, and classes and trying to find time to sleep) it's hard to find down time. But not matter what, I always find time to read. Even if it's for ten minutes before bed. And although I've never been a big TV watcher..there are so many good shows out! Let me update you on what I've been watching and reading.

So over the summer I read the Harry Potter series..I know..I'm really late. These books were absolutely incredible!

It was so hard for me to move on (I'm actually considering reading them again right now) but when my mom finished "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins and suggested I try it..I gave it a shot. It was awesome!
I'm so glad there were two more to follow because I couldn't get enough of Katniss, Peeta, and all the other dynamic characters. The next two in the series are "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay". Almost done with "Mockingjay" and I can't decide which one is my favorite! I highly recommend all three of the books.

After hearing about Games of Thrones from about..every person that I know I decided I would give it a shot (the show..more on the books later) I've never really been into the midevil genre but how bad could it be? I was totally hooked after one show. That show has so many kick-ass characters, crazy sub-plots, and horses how could you not like it? After finishing the whole first season I'm anxiously awaiting to see what's in store for season 2. And yes..I did start reading the book.
Even though life gets pretty hectic, it's nice to unwind with a good book or some crazy TV action. Have you read any books lately? Or are you excited for any fall season premiere?
