Food Quotes

So I love reading quotes. Some people are so inspiring..others are just hilarious and I love things that make you think. I've been looking at food quotes recently and I found a few that I want to share!

It's bizarre that the produce manager is more important to my children's health than the pediatrician.  ~Meryl Streep
I love this..most people don't think about it but diet is such an important part of overall health. America is getting so caught up in "a pill for every ill" that no one stops to think that a well balanced diet can prevent so many conditions.

Food is an important part of a balanced diet.  ~Fran Lebowitz, Metropolitan Life, "Food for Thought and Vice Versa"
This is another one that I feel rings true with how people are eating today. Processed cheese product? What does that even mean? Can't I just eat cheese? So many "foods" are made of all these crazy chemicals that no one can even pronounce. Why would you want to put that in your body? When I'm food shopping I like to use Michael Pollan's rules of, buy it if it has less than 5 ingredients and the ingredients have less than 3 syllables. Perfect.

If God had intended us to follow recipes,
He wouldn't have given us grandmothers.
~Linda Henley

This is just cute :)

Sticky Words

As a society, we are OBSESSED with pictures. Think about it. The best part of Facebook? Sharing *stalking* yours and other people's pictures. How do you get someone to pick up your magazine? Have an awesome picture on the front. Movies and TV. Although not "pictures" they are still images. We love things we can see. First impressions are even based on looks first. With so much emphasis on appearance, it's no wonder that people are overly body conscious.

Check out their website for more information on Weight Stigma and how you can participate

This week is Weight Stigma Awareness Week. Weight stigma is the judgment of a person based solely on their body size. Body image and disordered eating are topics that I have very strong feelings about and a very personal relationship with. I'll maybe share my story on here in later posts, but for now head on over to my post about Weight Stigma Awareness Week on the Sargent Choice Nutrition Center Blog. Also check out THIS post on body image. Although the event itself was last spring, there are some quotes on there that are always relevant.

'I refuse to become part of this perfect-body syndrome. I like my body. It looks good on-screen, and it's not because it's perfect. I accept it and wear it like a good dress... One guy I dated said: "You're beautiful, but you're soft. You can't compete with other actresses in Hollywood because everyone's in shape and working out." I said: "Very nice to meet you. Good-bye!"' -- Salma Hayek

Watching and Reading

With my crazy busy schedule (2 jobs, and classes and trying to find time to sleep) it's hard to find down time. But not matter what, I always find time to read. Even if it's for ten minutes before bed. And although I've never been a big TV watcher..there are so many good shows out! Let me update you on what I've been watching and reading.

So over the summer I read the Harry Potter series..I know..I'm really late. These books were absolutely incredible!

It was so hard for me to move on (I'm actually considering reading them again right now) but when my mom finished "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins and suggested I try it..I gave it a shot. It was awesome!
I'm so glad there were two more to follow because I couldn't get enough of Katniss, Peeta, and all the other dynamic characters. The next two in the series are "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay". Almost done with "Mockingjay" and I can't decide which one is my favorite! I highly recommend all three of the books.

After hearing about Games of Thrones from about..every person that I know I decided I would give it a shot (the show..more on the books later) I've never really been into the midevil genre but how bad could it be? I was totally hooked after one show. That show has so many kick-ass characters, crazy sub-plots, and horses how could you not like it? After finishing the whole first season I'm anxiously awaiting to see what's in store for season 2. And yes..I did start reading the book.
Even though life gets pretty hectic, it's nice to unwind with a good book or some crazy TV action. Have you read any books lately? Or are you excited for any fall season premiere?

How I'm Staying Sane

Two presentations and an exam this week. Two exams the following week. Don't forget work. At both jobs. Oh ya and go to class. And actually pay attention. Throw in a student counsel meeting and a club meeting here and there, and you get junior year. Every night my roommate and I come back to our cozy apartment and pass out in front of an episode of the Office or Grey's (such great season openers for both!). Junior year is the ultimate mental-stability test, and so far I'm passing. Yes it's crazy. My colorful Google Calendar is evidence of it. Yet somehow I'm completely in love with this year so far. About 80% of my happiness is due to that I'm finally doing work that I love and am passionate about. The other 10% is thanks to a bunch of randomness, which I've listed below. Hopefully some of these things can help keep you sane too!

The other 10%:

1. My Coffee Press
Greatest invention. No worries about burnt coffee or remembering to set the timer. You just simply pour in boiling water and a tablespoon or so of ground coffee beans, and you have a perfectly rich, full-bodied cup of coffee ready in 5 minutes. Coffee + Almond Milk + Dark Chocolate Syrup = My survival strategy for this semester.

2. Vera Bradley Mugs my roommate and I got at Good Will for 99 cents a piece
No cup of coffee or tea is complete without the perfect mug to drink it out of.

3. Veggie Galaxy and LifeAlive
Two AWESOME all-vegetarian restaurants in Central Square. It’s a very good thing I don’t go to MIT because all my money would be blown on vegan chocolate cakes; warm, flavorful bowls of nutritious amazingness, and make your own veggie burgers with the most amazing sun-dried tomato spread and bacon tempeh (sounds odd but trust me it’s delicious). Look for my reviews of both places complete with mouth-watering pictures soon!!

4. City and Colour’s Bring Me Your Love and Little Hell albums
Check out both of these albums. I’ve listened to at least one track everyday since August. New obsession.

5. Pearl Jam’s Just Breathe and Last Kiss
I started every day this week with either one of these songs. Pretty sure I had Last Kiss on repeat all day yesterday. Love Eddie Vedder.

Guiltless is a truly amazing blog by Elizabeth Jarrad and Stephanie Horton. The purpose of the blog is for people to share their stories about their relationships with food and what they love about themselves and their bodies. This blog is so wonderfully positive and the posts give you that glow inside that can only come from realizing how truly beautiful you are. PLEASE check them out!

7. My version of Peanut Butter Puffins
Yes you can go to the store and buy a big box of peanut butter puffins and they will be delicious. OR you can go my route and get not only the flavor of peanut butter, but the creamy texture as well. Pour a bowl of original puffins in a bowl then add a small amount of almond milk (I use the original flavor, the unsweetened just doesn’t do it for me). For the final touch, I add a small spoon-full of natural peanut butter.

8. My new “Floor” playlist
Every night before going to bed I put on this playlist and do yoga in the living room. Phil Collins, Sia,and Band of Horses are just a few of the essentials to wind down.

Stay Sane!

The Adventures of Two Healthy Wanderers

About Alli:
I think the best way to summarize myself is a cow-obsessed, beach-loving, secret hippie who's life is about food. That pretty much covers it. I've been playing in the sand since I could walk and probably before that. Growing up in the suburbs of Boston has given me a love of the ocean that will always be a part of me. When I'm not listening to the waves I prefer to be in the kitchen, the library, or behind the lens of my camera. Cooking, reading, and photography are my passions and I think you'll see that come through in my posts with 187 pictures of what I've been eating, or my review of the book I'm reading. I believe in eating healthy, whole foods not just because they make your body work at its best but because they make you feel good. And that's what life is about right? Living it to the fullest. I consider myself mostly a vegetarian, although I enjoy the occasional piece of fish or poultry, so don't expect any cheeseburger recipes here. But you should expect lots of delicious, nutritious recipes and restaurant reviews.
How could I forget to mention music? I'm a former high school band geek who can't go 2 minutes without listening to something. Music has always been a major part of me, and just like the ocean it will never leave.

About Kelli:
First thing you should know about me is I am madly and deeply in love with peanut butter. I can’t remember a day where I didn’t at least have a small spoonful of it. But enough about my peanut butter obsession (you’ll hear MUCH more about it in future posts). Originally from Denver, Colorado, I love all things outdoors. I had my feet strapped to skis by the time I was 3 and was blessed to have been raised going up to the mountains every weekend. The hippie in me truly believes there is nothing more refreshing to the soul than spending time outdoors, without any cars or huge skyscrapers around. So why on earth did I choose a city like Boston to live in? Although there aren’t any mountains to climb, Boston is a city of pedestrians. I love that I can walk wherever I need to go. Recently, I’ve acquired a knee injury that prevents me from being able to run, but when my knees were cooperating, there was nothing I loved more than running down brick sidewalks lined with historic brownstones. In addition to running, my passions are in yoga and reading. I have a random love of books with my favorites consisting of horror novels, Victorian Era classics, and Eastern theology texts.

My ultimate love is food. Although technically a pescetarian (fish being the only kind of “meat” I eat), I tend to eat a non-dairy vegetarian diet 97% of the time. Eating is a lifestyle that is individual to every person. My eating habits are perfect for me, they make me happy, but I would never say they are what everyone else should be eating.  I’ll be posting a lot of vegetarian and vegan recipes as well as vegan-friendly restaurants in Boston, so get excited! I also have a love for indie/folk music, so I apologize in advance for anyone who isn’t a fan – hopefully I can convert you!
